Dr. Sezgin graduated summa cum laude with Honors from Syracuse University in 1999. He received his MS in 2001 and his PhD in 2006, both from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2006. As of Jan 2009, he has been an Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering at Koç University, Istanbul. Dr. Sezgin leads the Intelligent User Interfaces Lab at Koç, and his main research goal is enabling people to interact with computers in a more natural fashion by combining techniques from machine learning, computer vision, computer graphics and human-computer interaction.
He received the B.S. degree from Bilkent University in 2004, the first M.S. degree from Koç University in 2006, and the second from University of Florida in 2008, and the Ph.D. degree from Koç University in 2012, all in computer science. He then worked as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Pennsylvania until 2014. His research interests are computer vision and graphics, and digital geometry processing.
Neşe Alyüz Çivitci
Post-doctoral Research Associate
She received her BS degree in Computer Engineering from Istanbul Technical University in 2005. She obtained her MS and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from Bogazici University in 2008 and 2013, respectively. In November 2013, she joined IUI Lab, as a post-doctoral researcher for the European Union project, "Integrated internet-based environment for social inclusion of children with autism spectrum conditions", focusing on the formative assessment and co-training topics. Her research interests include computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and machine learning.
Post-doctoral Research Associate
Başak joined IUI Lab with a Tübitak funded research project on designing and developing human-centered interfaces for computer supported classrooms.
She completed her PhD degree at University of California Santa Barbara in 2013. Her doctoral research topic was bridging 2D and 3D visualizations through novel interaction and representation techniques that would benefit visualization of both abstract and scientific data sets.
Başak has been working on information visualization and human computer interaction topics for the past seven years. She worked for Microsoft Research, Seattle (2010), IBM Research, Almaden (2011) and Inria, Saclay (2012) research centers. She holds a BA degree in Visual Communication Design from Sabancı University (2004), and an MS degree in Computer Science from the same university (2006).

Çağlar is currently a Ph.D. student in Computer Science and Eng. program at Sabanci University. His Ph.D. is supervised by Prof. Berrin Yanikoglu (Sabanci University) and co-supervised by Prof. Metin Sezgin (Koc University). He received his Bs. degree in Computer Science and Eng. program from Sabanci University and his M.Sc. degree in Computer Eng. program from Yildiz Technical University. His research interests are face recognition / verification, gender / age estimation from face images, sketch recognition and human computer interaction. Çağlar joined IUI Lab in 2010.

Senem Ezgi Emgin
First year Ph.D student.
She received her B.Sc. degree in Information Systems Engineering from Boğaziçi University, and in Computer Science from SUNY Binghamton University in 2009. She received her M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from SUNY Binghamton University. Her work is co-supervised with Dr. Basdogan. She is currently working on vibrotactile touch screens.
Ferhat received his M.Sc. in Computer Science from State University of New York at Albany and his B.Sc. in Computer Education and Instructional Technologies from Middle East Technical University.
His research interests include human computer interaction, intelligent user interfaces, machine learning and computer graphics.
Bekir Berker Türker
Berker received his B.Sc. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Izmir Institute of Technology. He is interested in Computer Vision, Speech Processing and Machine Learning. He is currently working on the project (Joke and Empathy of a Robot/ECA) which targets social and affective relations with a robot.
Özem received her B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from Istanbul Technical University. She is interested in signal processing and machine learning.
Shabbir is currently pursuing masters degree at KOC University. He completed his bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) at LUMS, Lahore, Pakistan. His main research interests are in the fields of Computer Vision and Machine Learning. He is a part of Joker(Joke and Empathy of a Robot/ECA) project which involves creating a dialogue system with capabilities of perceiving and responding to human emotions/affective states.

Kemal Tuğrul Yeşilbek
Kemal Tugrul Yesilbek recieved his B.Sc. degree in Software Engineering from Izmir University of Economics in 2013. He is interested in sketch based human-computer interaction. He firstly joined IUI Lab in June 2012 as a summer researcher and currently he is a M.Sc. student.
Cansu received her B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from Yıldız Technical University. She has been working at IUI Lab since July, 2013. She is currently working on a semi-supervised intelligent multimodal content translator system for smart TVs.
Şerike received her B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from Middle East Technical University in June, 2013. She is interested in image processing, machine learning, computer vision and pattern recognition. She is currently working on the project "Intelligent User Interfaces for Student Assessment through Free-Form Questions".
Banuçiçek received her B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Istanbul Bilgi University. She is interested in analysis of how people perceive sketches and integrating sketch-based user interfaces with educational software.
Zahra is a senior B.Sc student of Computer Engineering Department at Sharif University of Technology, Iran. She is a member of Image Processing Laboratory for two years. During her summer internship in IUI Laboratory, she has worked on Visualization of an Intelligent User Interface for Student Assessment through Free-Form Questions and she produced an android application of Navigable Treemap. Her main topics of interests revolve about Human Computer Interaction, 3D computer Vision and Computer Graphics.
Sardar is currently a B.Sc. student in Computer Sciences at Sharif University of Technology. He worked as a member of Meraj National Airlines, Developing Software Team, in the summer of his sophomore year. He took part in “semi-supervised intelligent multi-modal content translator system for smart TVs” project, in the summer of his junior year at Intelligent User Interfaces, at Koç University, as Summer Researcher. His major interests are Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Networks, and Algorithms.

Ayşe Küçükyılmaz received her BS degree in Computer Engineering from Bilkent University in 2004. She obtained her MS degree in 2007 from the same department. Between 2005 and 2007, she was a member of the 3DTV EU Project, where she worked on 3D graphical object representations. Following her graduation, she worked as a junior engineer and completed projects on video processing, analysis, and motion tracking for security applications. In 2008, she started to pursue a PhD degree in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Department at Koç University under the supervision of Dr. Cagatay Basdogan and Dr. Metin Sezgin. She has been a member of the Robotics and Mechatronics Laboratory (RML) and the Intelligent User Interfaces Laboratory (IUI) since then. Her current research interests include natural human-computer interaction in virtual domains, haptic user interfaces, affective computing, and machine learning applications in adaptive and immersive multimodal user interfaces.
Erelcan received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from Koç University. He is working on vision and pattern recognition. He is interested in computer graphics and creating intelligent user interfaces.
Atakan received his B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from Koc University. He is building a vibro-tactile stylus for use in pen-based interfaces. His work is co-supervised by Dr. Basdogan of the Robotics and Mechatronics Laboratory.
Mustafa TÜLÜ is a forth
year Engineering Physics student at University of Gaziantep. His major interest
is Robotics. He develops both hardware and software applications. Programming
microchips, developing user interface applications, solid engineering design
are in his favorites. He is also a registered Apple Developer, he loves
developing applications for IOS. His mission is combining science and
engineering, being a part of innovative work.

Eren attended IUI Lab in the summer of his sophomore year at Ozyegin University. He is studying Computer Science and interested in Machine Learning, Artificial Neural Networks and Computational Neuroscience. While at IUI Lab, he worked on developing an online gaze recognition interface.

Emrah is a senior student at the Department of Computer Engineering, Middle East Technical University. He is interested in computer graphics and sign recognition. He minors in Operational Research in Industrial Engineering at METU. Emrah joined IUI LAB in Summer 2010, and he is working on primitive extraction for free-hand strokes.

İsmail is a Visiting Summer Researcher. He is a third year undergraduate student at the Electronics Engineering Department of İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi. İsmail is working on recognition of freehand circuit diagrams. He is interested in machine learning, human-machine interfaces and embedded system design.
S. Özgür Öğüz

Özgür holds a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering from Koc University. He is interested in 3D graphics, physics-based simulation, human-computer interaction, as well as machine learning, and their applications in HCI. His thesis focused on multimodal collaboration models in virtual environments with haptic, visual, and auditory feedbacks. Özgür joined the IUI Lab in 2008. He was also a member of the Robotics and Mechatronics Laboratory (RML), and was co-supervised by Prof. Basdogan.

Mustafa Emre Acer

Mr. Acer graduated from Middle East Technical University, with a B.S. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering in 2008. He worked on sound processing and broadcast tracking projects at the TUBITAK UZAY Institute during his junior and senior years. He joined the Intelligent User Interfaces Lab to work on sketch recognition, intelligent user interfaces and machine learning.
